Kemoeng said they have been overly impressed of the success of this year's event.
"There is no doubt the games leaves behind a feeling of happiness, excitement, and nostalgia among participants, organizers and spectators alike, " he said. He thanked everyone who made the games a success singling out the leadership of the 16 participating districts for working hard to make sure their districts attended the games.
The six-day competition started last Monday and attracted 3570 athletes in various sporting codes from 16 districts around the country. In addition, there were 674 team officials, 324 team technicians and 176 volunteers who were involved in the running of the games.
The cost for the games was P6.2 million, which Kemoeng described as money well spent. " We have no regrets at all for having invested the resources in the games for the game's objectives are well in line with the template of the BNSC," he said.
He however lambasted some sections of the press for what he labeled as giving the games 'bad publicity' by suggesting that they were an absolute waste of resources, which could have been channeled to other needy sections of sport development. He said the media should not always look for negatives, but also report on positive things from events like this.
Kemoeng said apart from unearthing talent and providing exposure for local athletes, the games also give the athletes a feel of what happens at international competitions, so that when they reach that stage, they are ready for a similar environment. In addition he said the games help the country prepare for other international games they will want to host in the future, like the All Africa Games which the council plans to host in 2019. He said in the future, they are considering to host the games in other parts of the country, provided there are adequate resources in those areas.
Kemoeng also said they are confident that the country's representatives at the 2016 Olympic Games will be products from the Botswana games. He however noted that they encountered some challenges during the games, though they did not destruct the smooth running of the competition.
We had some few problems like failure to provide birth verification documents for athletes, holding preparatory camps for the games and accommodation problems, but we managed to tackle them and the games went on as planned. Though some of the problems encountered are synonymous with games of this magnitude, we learnt from our mistakes and we would work hard to improve next time," he said.
He concluded by urging all stakeholders to start preparations for the 2011 games as early as possible to avoid some of the problems they encountered this year. He said as the BNSC, they will start resource mobilization for the next games in the first quarter of 2010.
Medals standing as of Saturday at noon showed that the Gaborone region was heading for victory again. The overall winners of the 2007 games were sitting at the top of the medal table with a total of 68 medals including 37 gold, 18 silver and 13 bronzes.
Francistown and Central regions fell way behind with 40 and 39 medals respectively with a few events left.
