BOBONONG: Assistant Minister of Agriculture and MP for Bobirwa Shaw Kgathi has urged the Botswana Football Association (BFA) to view the idea of constituency league in a positive light and integrate it in their structures.

Speaking during a prize-giving ceremony in Bobonong recently, Kgathi expressed concern that while the league is geared towards enhancing sports development, others view it as drifting into the BFA mandate. "What worries the most is that BFA looks at it as interference. They should embrace and integrate it into their structures because even the way they select the national team has loopholes and one-sided.

The constituency league is an important structure to help BFA improve. In fact BFA should appoint talent scouts throughout all the constituency league games instead of concentrating on the winning team," Kgathi said. He said it is regrettable how BFA views constituency football including threats to report the matter to FIFA, the International Association of Football Federations.

The BFA's position on the league is that football cannot be administered by government.

Premier League Committee (PLC) secretary Phuthego Setete said the world football governing body, FIFA does not tolerate government interference in football affairs.

"FIFA does not entertain it when football is run by government because it does not want political interference in football. Otherwise BFA does not have any problem with the league."

The assistant minister of Agriculture, who is also the Bobonong Member of Parliament (MP), expressed concern over the absence of women in football both as players and administrators. He also said it is mandatory that councillors and the Department of Youth and Culture participate and play a significant role in the constituency games.

He told players that it is impossible to reconsider (downwards) the age limit of 35 years as it might sideline  other talented youths. Kgathi said at 35, one should retire from football. "The whole idea here is to enhance the pattern of football development, otherwise the league would drift into the structures of the BFA."

Representatives of the teams had suggested that independent people should be appointed to run the league to prevent conflict of interest and bias that would in turn overshadow the objective of the whole idea. They also suggested the pooling system to determine the fixtures to avoid a situation where other teams enjoy playing games in their own villages while others incur costs travelling away to honour fixtures.

They requested that money be set aside to enable the appointment of professional referees to motivate them to effectively handle the games.

Meanwhile, Tshokwe Junior Chiefs emerged the winners and went away with the P8,000 cash prize.
