My Star winner clinches 3-yr contract with Master D

The 2009 My Star winner, Kitso Selato, has revealed that he has signed a three-year contract with Pop Star Botswana Company. My Star Company, owned by Master D, has also hired a manager for Selato, his runners-up Dineo and Naledi, and the 2008 winner Tebogo Tlhagadikgora.

Selato says although the company does not pay him a monthly salary, management is committed to ensuring that the artists have a minimum of three shows in a month from which they get paid. " It is not too bad, so far things are going well," said Selato in an interview from his home.

However, the singer, who also recorded an album last year, was not ready to share with Showbiz how the album is doing on the market. " I honestly can't say much at the moment. We have a meeting towards the end of this month at which Master D will brief me on the figures you are asking for. However, I have observed copies being ordered from the studio, while sales during our shows have been impressive," Selato said.

Thanks to Master D, the My Star products also have a live band playing for them in the shows as part of the branding of their R&B music. According to Selato, they have had eight shows since the festive season, though the band is yet to stage a show in Gaborone.

But they have been to the northern part of the country, especially Maun, and Orapa, where they have staged two shows.  They   My Star products are yet again scheduled to perform in Orapa towards the end of the month, with their first ever show in Gaborone billed for the following weekend. They will be joined by Vee in Orapa, while Scar could share the stage with them in Gaborone.

Asked why he is not usually seen sharing the stage with other local artists, Selato said his contract with Pop Star Botswana does not allow him to organise shows for himself.

"Every show I do, it has to be routed through Master D, I am not allowed to just perform in shows," he said adding that in the past the marketing company has invited local big names to share the stage with them (My Star products).

" In one show in Selebi-Phikwe, for instance, we shared the stage with Slizer, Shumba, MC Maswe, Don B, Bizza, as well as Smarh. We also shared the stage with Bizza and   a Zambian artist in Maun," Selato explained.

Meanwhile, the  My Star products could have their first show outside Botswana borders next month, with two shows billed for Harare and Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, although Selato said details of the shows are yet to be finalised.
