One of the local radio stations, GabzFM is celebrating its 10th anniversary in style. This weekend the celebrations will be extended to the Northern parts of the country. GabzFM is identified with its catchy slogan of "Today's hits, yesterday's classics".

The station's commercial manager, Pamela Gwanzura, said the celebrations kicked off with a classical jam show at Boipuso Hall. They are taking the party to Francistown on Friday where they will organise a gig at the Tati River Lodge.
The following day the celebrations will be held in Maun at the Trekkers nightclub.Gwanzura said they are organising shows in the North because they want to celebrate with their listeners in the area.
The grand celebrations will be held at the Gaborone International Convention Centre (GICC) on December 12. Some of the artists featuring at the main event will include the South African based Tshepho Tshola, Pio Kgosinkwe of Mafikizolo and the tantalising women in jazz - Punah Gabasiane, Nono Siile, Nnunu Ramagotsi and Kearoma Rantao.
The DJs' line-up includes Bogieman, Lety, Tshipidi, Mileys, Trax and Easy Bee. There would also be instant prizes to be won by guests. The prizes include a laptop, weekend for two at Nitani Lodge near Tuli Block, a return trip for three couples to Kenya, Air Botswana tickets for two in Kasane where they will be accommodated at the Mowana Lodge. There will also be Shenaz give-aways and beauty treatment as well as Braai Place meal vouchers, Square Mart grocery vouchers, and a new iphone.
It has not always been smooth sailing for GabzFM during its 10 years of existence.Gwanzura reflects that during the first eight years of their existence, there was restriction in terms of coverage. By then the radio station's coverage was only restricted to Gaborone and its environs. "It was a major challenge," she says.
The station has since extended its coverage to parts of the country like Francistown, Maun, Selebi-Phikwe, Mahalapye, Palapye, Serowe, Lobatse, Molepolole, Mochudi, Mogoditshane, Ramotswa, Thamaga, Tlokweng and Tonota. The commercial manager said they extended their coverage during the past two years and the response from the listeners has been positive.
"We have an SMS platform and phone-in system where we get responses from listeners in those areas," she said. Listeners also send their feed back through the radio station's website. Gwanzura said the station had a significant growth over the past 10 years. Even in terms of business, there has been growth. She said they have also done well in terms of programmes offerings.
During the weekdays, there is a morning programme dedicated to current affairs. The station is striving to offer a good balance in terms of talk shows as well as music, which is relevant to their market.
Other than the morning show which deals with current affairs during the week, there is also a mid morning segment targeting housewives or people who have access to radio at work. It deals with all sorts of topics concerning lifestyles. The mid morning show stretches up to lunch.In the afternoon, there is "The Highway" which anchored by Losika Seboni followed by Jazelle's show in the evenings.Jazalle's show deals with a variety of topics that affects everyday life.
The amazing breakfast show is hosted by Gabriel Rasetshwane and Olebogeng Morebodi. Former RB2 presenter Tshepo Ntshole hosts the mid morning show.
Weekly features include the heart surgeon, which showcases testimonials of different medical successes. There is also Tshireletso Motlogelwa's political talk show, the Platform.On Wednesday, renowned author and University of Botswana (UB) academic Barolong Seboni presents a programme which looks at the achievements of former UB students.
On weekends there are different crop of DJs on the beat. One of the popuplar music programmes offered by the station is the Mascom Top 20. For jazz enthusiasts, there is Uncle Shima's jazz show on Sunday afternoon.
During its early days, GabzFM used to host a popular talk show, Hot Potato hosted by Solomon Monyame and the late Lettie Gaelesiwe. GabzFM together with YaronaFm are the first privately owned radio stations to operate in the country. They have since been joined by another privately owned radio station, DumaFm.
In the past there was only one government controlled radio station, Radio Botswana or RB1 as it has come to be known. The government established a commercial channel, RB2 in 1992 that was more like a pilot project. Initially RB2 was only broadcasting in Gaborone. It has since become a popular national radio station.
