So perhaps Michelle Obama should have thought twice before posing enthusiastically for her latest photo opportunity in Botswana.

The First Lady, who has been criticised before for failing to practise what she preaches when it comes to her health food drive, made a quick stop at a small restaurant in a Botswanan village on Saturday to sample some of the local fare - fat cakes and French fries.

Video footage shows her smiling broadly for the cameras as she made the stop with daughters Malia and Sasha.

She is seen introducing herself to the locals who work in the restaurant before being given a take-out box of the fast food.  Among the delicacies on offer were French fries, fat cakes and huge sausages.  The First Lady bowed graciously as she accepted the gift before leaving.

Mrs Obama arrived in Botswana early on Friday after spending several days in South Africa promoting health, education and youth leadership.

Villagers welcomed the American First Lady's visit.  Mochudi Resident Sizwe Moeketsi, said: "I am very proud of her visit here, even for the restaurant as well, it will improve, it is a mileage as well because if they can use

her trip very well, it can even upgrade their profile.

"Just passing by Muchudu village is very nice, it will even go into our history books."  The First Lady's Let's Move! campaign is a nationwide initiative that seeks to promote making healthy choices, improve food quality in schools, and increase access to healthy, affordable food across the country.

Michelle Obama has come under fire from the conservative right many times before, with critics pointing to what she is spotted eating in public and saying that she doesn't practice what she preaches.  She was accused earlier this year of stuffing a staggering 2 200 calorie meal into the mouths of state governors at a White House gala.

The Obamas were given a personal welcome by 25 children when they landed in Botswana on Friday.  The excited group, clad in traditional clothing, greeted the First Lady as she arrived on the second leg of a week-long goodwill visit to Africa after flying in from Cape Town, South Africa.

The youngsters, aged between six and 18, wore costumes of animal hide with shells around their ankles, as they clapped and danced, singing 'Obama Ye-Le-Le'. (Daily Mail)
