Street Gang fortunes take a dive with Tla o bone

Kwaito-kwasa outfit Street Gang have had mixed fortunes in music. Their debut album Reaiketsetsa might have not been such a big hit, but it was good enough to catapult them to the top of the music charts.

The second one Sukunyetsa Bana Ba Utlwe was a big hit by local standards echoing in almost every street corner even months after its release. Who would have thought ECCO City Greens' Zimbabwean striker would end up with the nick name 'Sukunyetsa'. The track was as hot as the song was two years ago.

As the album Sukunyetsa made the group one of the country's finest finds this decade, expectations were also rising. Many believed Street Gang were destined for major success.

So fans waited anxiously for the group's third instalment but when it finally landed last year, it was no where nearer the first two albums. Orders for the album just trickled in and fans would not get excited during the promotional shows.

In short, the group has somehow taken a step backwards with the album Tla O Bone. One of the band members Moatshe Lekwapa has admitted that their latest release has failed to either increase their fan base or bring in more money.

"Tla O Bone has not done well at all. There are several factors that contributed to this, one being the fact that after Sukunyetsa the group split and we had to regroup to work on another album. We also used a different producer from the one who did our first two albums. But the other factor was that it was not properly marketed," Lekwapa told Showbiz.

It was against this background that the group decided to take it easy and "won't release another album yet," according to Lekwapa.

Right now, he said, the focus is on shooting a DVD, which is to include some songs from their three albums.

"We are working on a DVD now because we want our music to be exposed to a broader fan base. We believe it is important because some people start attending shows once they have seen how good you can be on stage and DVDs are just one of the things that you need to market yourself," he said.

Once bitten twice shy. Lekwapa said they had learnt from the failure of their third album and they were not taking chances with their DVD. They believe in getting experienced people to help them produce a high standard piece of work, hence they have approached Alfred Mosimanegape for assistance.

"We are dealing with a few a experienced people who we believe can help channel our creativity in the right direction, Alfredo is just one of them. We have another lady who has been involved in movie making and we believe she can produce nice clips. We have already started talking to people who are good at editing videos to weed out unwanted images and sounds," he said.
