The show was well-attended, but the frail looking Mtukudzi was not in his element. It was only here and there that he showed his brilliance. But overall his performance was drab.
Hundreds of music lovers had turned up for the festival. Actually, the Botswana Craft courtyard was not the ideal venue for hosting such a well-attended festival. Some revellers were turned away because the tickets were sold out. The promoters said they had only printed 800 tickets, which were sold out by Friday. Even the chilly weather could not deter the music lovers who thronged the venue. There was hardly space as the courtyard was filled to capacity.
Mtukudzi performed for more than an hour, but his performance was not exhilarating.
This was not the usual Tuku. The man was not just in his element.
Unlike in the previous shows, Mtukudzi did not bring his full band. It seemed as if he came to promote his guitarist son, Sam.
Mtukudzi played some of his popular tunes but it was not with the same vigour that he is renowned for. He was also let down by the poor sound system. On some occasions, it was hardly audible.
If the patrons would cry that they were not given their money's worth, they would be justified. The entrance fee was P150.
Dyer joined him on the stage at the end of the show. In his show, Dyer performed with local artists, Rampholo Molefhe and Lister Boleseng. This was a memorable reunion for the trio, who used to be members of the defunct Gaborone band, Shakawe. The three musicians had a great time on the stage.
A mean sax player, Boleseng nearly stole the show as he went about his business.
Molefhe played some of his unrecorded compositions, while Dyer also belted out the tunes that he released over the years.
It seems the man that everyone was waiting for, was Mtukudzi. He was welcomed onto the stage with rapturous roar. But this was not to be his day.
Mtukudzi, who was on a tight schedule, flew to Harare the following day for a wedding. He is also to embark on a European tour.
A good number of local artists like Malombo Mmereki, Ndingo Johwa, Nono Siile and Socca Moruakgomo had attended the Friday show.
In terms of business, the show was a success.
