The Botswana Democratic Party has steeped candidacy fees for the 2009 general elections. A press statement from the BDP's executive secretary, Dr Comma Serema announces the doubling of parliamentary candidates' application fees from P1 000 to P2 000

"Following our just ended BDP National Council in which a resolution to look into the possibilities of increasing the primary elections fees was passed, the central committee has considered and (agreed) that the fees be increased," the statement says.

Fees for local council aspirants have trebled from P500 to P1 500. In an interview with the Monitor, Serema said the hiking of the fees was an effort to raise funds ahead of the 2009 elections and that most of the money would be used to run the party's primary elections.
