Two Somalis fined for uttering false documents

FRANCISTOWN: Two Somali women have been fined P700 each by senior magistrate Thato Mujaji for uttering false documents to Nata Police last January. Hassen Hawai Shire and Hilul Yusuf were convicted and told to pay the fines or risk three months in jail after they pleaded guilty to charges of producing false identity documents. Shire had produced an identity document bearing the names Ali Elmi while Yusuf's had the names Said Farah Jama.

In her judgement, Mujaji said she considered all the mitigation factors submitted by defence counsel Lyndon Mothusi and Shire's husband Varian. "I have also considered that you are aged 40 and 45 respectively and that you are female offenders. The first accused person (Shire) is taking care of a mentally retarded child.
