The BWMA would like to promote the knowledge that hunters of today pride themselves in subscribing to a strict code of conduct and good practice - this responsible attitude results in ethical harvesting of Botswana's natural and renewable wildlife resource.
The true hunting sportsman of today places the greatest value on the outdoor experience of the safari, learning from the bush around him and not measuring his success by the amount of game he has harvested.
The hunter holds a deep respect for the land, the wildlife, the communities, and for those who will come after him.
Hunting has paved the way for modern conservation practices and most major wildlife refuges were born from hunters who protected the area from exploitation by agriculture or human expansion.
Today hunting provides considerable financial contribution to formal conservation in the form of licenses, hunting fees, resource royalties, lease fees, permits and sponsorships.
Hunting supports the local and national economy, creating jobs and career enhancement, injecting money into the economy by purchasing local services, goods and supplies.
Hunting activities deter poachers from entering wildlife management areas and when requested assist with Problem Animal Control by preventing undesirable predatory species moving into agricultural or rural areas.
Hunting is a part of the diversification of the economy and a generator of foreign exchange.
Animals allocated for hunting are those determined by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks management and research staff deemed to be surplus and able to be harvested on a sustainable basis.
Strict control over hunting is exercised by the DWNP, and a DWNP representative accompanies all hunters on safari. In community areas, DWNP trained community escort guides the hunter.
The guardian of hunting in Botswana is the Botswana Wildlife Management Association (BWMA) and the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (DWNP).
Any Professional Hunter, as a member of the BWMA, who is found to have contravened the Act and / or Regulations on legal grounds and / or Code of Conduct on ethical grounds will be dismissed from the Association immediately.
Based on the statement above, the BWMA would like to invite members of the public to report any information on any infringements of the Law/Act/Regulations and Code of Conduct, relating to hunting operations, to the BWMA Executive Committee, who will be guided by feedback from an investigation into the matter
