Ngwaketse West legislator, Mephato Reatile told Parliament yesterday that the expatriate at the UB Department of Management was recently promoted to senior lecturer though there is evidence or reason to believe that he plagiarised journal articles. Reatile alleged that the contract of the lecturer in question was renewed under dubious circumstances.

He said that a citizen who was interested in the same position was disqualified after his application documents conveniently went missing. The MP said such things mar the image and standing of the UB, particularly its claims to the pursuit of academic excellence.

But in response to the claims, Assistant Minister, Kavis Kario denied that the lecturer is involved in plagiarism. However, he said the UB realised that there were similarities between the lecturer's work and another article. He said that that the UB investigated the matter and found that that the topic was similar but the methodology and the literature used were different. He added that the UB is doing things according to international standards and there is no way a lecturer can be allowed to plagiarise. Kario denied that an application by a local went missing at UB. He emphasised that international practices are followed at UB when promotions are effected.
