He explained that they would be working with the relevant authority to have the youth sent to the school that will be built in Gumare, for rehabilitation instead of sending them to prison. He mentioned that when youth are sent to prison, they meet hardened criminals who influence them to become hardened criminals.
The CEO added that the trust has been running for the past two years and its main mandate is to advocate for children's rights especially those who are found in farms. "We find and return children that stay on farms and fields (masimo) to school. We rehabilitate them with the assistance of social workers. The trust also discourages children from drugs use," he said.
Masweu explained that since their inception they have gone out and found that there are children who are being denied their rights to education. He said that UNICEF is enquiring about the 15 percent of children born in hospitals and attained the age of six, but do not feature in schools. He mentioned that such children have fallen into the cracks of the society where they are hidden.
He said there are some children who have inherited working on the farms as labourers from their parents and poverty. He stated that the system becomes a vicious circle, which they are trying to break. Masweu observed that farm owners believe that they have the right to own such people.
"The government must try to assist us as trusts because we have challenges such as lack of funds and capacity. We do not have the resources to discharge our mandate.
We have managed to cover areas like Robelela, Tshokwe, Tobane, Ralenyeletse fields and other cattle posts surrounding Selebi-Phikwe identifying children," he said.
He explained that such children do not even have access to health facilities because they stay very far from developments. He said residents of Bobirwa Sub-district have also welcomed the trust and some have gone to the extent of showing them children who are in farms. He explained that the trust is also planning to host a charity musical festival in South Africa next year featuring international artists. Masweu said the trust is also planning to build a shelter for children.
The shelter would house children who have been abused by their families, adding that they will be staying there until the situation improves at their homes.
He also mentioned that they touch on women issues because they mostly face abuse from men with them.
Masweu also said the trust together with the Department of Women's Affairs, will host a talk show on Monday (November 30) at the Selebi-Phikwe District Commissioner's office as part of pushing women's and children's agenda.
Meanwhile, Selebi-Phikwe Ackerman's shop donated clothing and shoes valued at around P12, 000 to the trust last week.
