President Ian Khama yesterday told a High Level Consultative Council (HLCC) that he has already put in place a mechanism that would see more police officers doing night shifts than there are doing day shifts.
Mmegi understands that Khama told the HLCC that the crime rate is rising at alarming proportions, majority of it happening in the cover of darkness.
Khama, a former Policeman himself, is understood to have told the HLCC that to mitigate the situation, he has discussed with the Police top brass how the problem can be tackled.
Khama also announced that his government will early next year pass the Competition Bill, which when enacted, will see certain job skills reserved strictly for Batswana.The Competition Bill will categorise all job skills reserved for Batswana. Mmegi understands the President's proposal was overwhelmingly endorsed by the HLCC. Some of the jobs identified immediately include lecturers at institutions such as GIPS, Limkwomkwing, and University of Botswana and private secondary schools, which employ a high number of foreign lecturers.
Meanwhile the government also assured the business community that from early next year it will support factoring companies - those companies offering credit facility or invoice discounting services to companies which need start up funds, after winning government tenders.
