The suspected criminal was arrested with the help of a member of the public. It is said the suspect is wanted by the Jwaneng CID. He sought to evade arrest after the CID agents, conducting a surveillance operation, caught him attempting to cheat someone. It is said the CID agents chased the man from Jwaneng to Gaborone where he reportedly gave them the slip.

But DIS agents got wind of the car chase and immediately swung into action. A witness says the car chase ended near Game City Mall in southern Gaborone. On his way from Lobatse road towards the Game City circle, the suspect took a quick left-turn towards Kgale View Filling Station. He attempted to manouvre his car through traffic in the car-park but was delayed, bumping against other cars with a Yaris sedan in hot pursuit.

"When they got to the spot just in front of Postnet, the suspect was blocked by an Audi sedan, and slowed down," says a witness. At this point a passerby jumped on the suspect and choked him through the side-window. "The suspect flashed something that might have been a gun at which point the man backed off. But the man's action bought agents time, and at that point one officer shot into the air and the suspect stopped and raised his hands in surrender. Two other agents overpowered the suspect and arrested him," said a witness.

The drama unfolded in the morning - a busy time in Gaborone on weekdays - and attracted a large crowd of onlookers.

Meanwhile, Jwaneng Police Station commander, Superintendent Kebafitlhetse Mothubane, said that his officers chased a suspect to Gaborone, but he could not be drawn into discussing the matter further. "At the moment I am awaiting their return from Gaborone to get a full report of the case," he said. DIS director-general, Isaac Kgosi said that he was out of the country and could neither confirm nor deny his officers' involvement in the arrest.
