Woman in court for conspiracy to kill daughter

A 52-year-old woman of Gabane, Motlalepula Monareng appeared before Broadhurst Magistrate Court charged with conspiracy to murder her own child.

Monareng of Rasokong ward is alleged to have conspired with Benny Modisane (for P100,0000 payment) to have her daughter Dolly killed last December, an offence which carries up to 14 years in prison. She pleaded not guilty to the charge alleging that her estranged daughter fabricated the story.

On a second count, Monareng faces fraud charges of obtaining by false pretences an amount of P90,000 from an unidentified complainant. It is alleged that the female complainant bought a plot from Monareng and it turned out later that the plot was not hers (Monareng).  She was not asked to plead on the fraud charge as the police are still investigating the matter and possible increase in the number of complainants. Monareng claims that a conspiracy charge against her is a plot by her daughter to discredit her. She told court that Dolly wants to divert attention from the assault charges that Dolly faces. "My daughter has a criminal case pending against me. She was detained for 14 days for pouring hot water on my face and now claims that I hired people to kill her," Monareng told the court. She broke down as she tried to convince the magistrate that she knew nothing about the charges and pleaded with her not to impose cash bail, as she did not have money, and her accounts have been frozen. In the end Magistrate Janet Jansen granted bail on both charges, on condition that she does not interfere with state witnesses and she should not be a suspect in any criminal matter pending the outcome of the case. She should also report to Mogoditshane Police Station weekly.  The magistrate also ordered that due to the seriousness of the conspiracy to murder charge, Monareng should pay cash bail of P1,000 and provide two sureties binding themselves with P1,000 each. She will appear again on February 21.
