The club had just opened for business when one of the employees who was supposed to be resuming duty arrived at the club and  noticed that the building was on fire. She went inside and warned her co-workers that the building was on fire. She claims that there was a minor explosion in the kitchen. According to a patron who was inside the Satchmos Night Club when the fire started, they did not notice the fire and were only told by employees of the club to go out as the building was on fire.

The fire was so strong that even though the fire fighters arrived with two water engines at 6.50pm, they battled to control it and one of the trucks run out of water. However, the truck that was being used at the side of the kitchen managed to control the fire there and finally extinguished and succeeded in removing the gas cylinders before they could explode.

By 7.30pm the fire had moved to the side of Horse Shoe Bar, X-Cut Hair Salon and Atlanta Butchery as the fire fighters were waiting for other trucks from Botswana Defence Force and Civil Aviation Authority. The fire fighters only noticed the fire hydrant very late when the fire had already engulfed the whole building. When the other fire trucks arrived at the scene they managed to control the fire but fought it until 12 midnight when there was only one water truck left and a minor smoke coming out of the building.

The officer in charge at Gaborone West Police Crime Investigation Department, Assistant Superintendent Tlotlanang Mogwase told The Monitor that even though they had a problem with members of the public who were disturbing the emergency staff while fighting the fire, they did not charge anyone they only warned them by talking to them."Batswana have a wrong tendency of crowding a scene even when we talk to them." One day we are going to lose a lot of lives," said Mogwase. He said their investigations are still at an early stage.
