Mmegi Online :: Letís probe Nchindoís death

He died a very tragic death that nobody, no matter how heartless, would ever wish even on the worst enemy. We are told that his body was found with parts devoured possibly by predators like lions and hyenas. Our hearts go out to the Nchindo family

In this edition, less than a day after his family had been informed of his death, we are delving into it as a news item. It is not that we lack the sensitivity nor the cultural respect that we should afford his family, especially at this hour when they need time to mourn his passing. Far from it, our hearts go out to his family but Nchindo’s life, the manner in which he died, the last days of his life were of humongous public interest.

Reams of newsprint have of late printed Nchindo’s revelations that the relationship between the Botswana government, ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) and De Beers was not at all beyond reproach. Thanks to Nchindo Batswana know that De Beers bankrolled the BDP and paid for most of their election campaigns.

We now know that former President Masire was bought out of the Presidency by De Beers. No matter how loud the former president would scream, it has been shown that Sir Ketumile did not after all keep a squeaky clean nose. It was stuffed by De Beers.

Nchindo had made further revelations that ex-president Mogae had relationships with a girlfriend or girlfriends. We could, of course, be dismissive and say this is a matter between Mogae and his wife. What if one of these girlfriends had gotten a very senior position in government owing to this relationship? these revelations helped to get a further look into the ways of government. Of course, Nchindo said some of these things not for public good, it was self-serving. Had it not been for the court case we would not have come across these revelations.

Whatever the motive the fact is that these revelations have served a public good in the end. Batswana will now demand transparency in our relationship with De Beers. In fact, civil society is already calling for a forensic audit of all the seedy liaisons between De Beers, BDP and all the alleged big wigs.

We want more on these revelations but Nchindo is no more. Dead men tell no tales. Was he under pressure now that his friends had deserted him that he was pushed to commit suicide or someone who felt that he knew too much saw the need to eliminate him before he could cause further embarrassment?

It is possible that he could have committed suicide and it is equally possible that his death was an accident or homicide? If he committed suicide why did he have to leave his mansion to die in the forest of lions and other dangerous animals? If he were killed who lured him out of his house to the den of lions? The nation needs answers to all these questions and the only way to get to the heart of the matter is through an independent investigation into his death lest we blame everyone including, DIS, police, lions, diamond dealers and God knows who!

                                                                                Today’s thought

Life is a tragedy for those who feel, and a comedy for those who think,
