Gaborone City Council (GCC) councillors say they are concerned by the ruling party’s use of public institutions to harass and intimidate opposition leaders.

The councillors said the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) is using institutions such the Botswana Unified Revenue Service (BURS), Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC), Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and the Directorate of Intelligence and Security Services (DIS) to harass politicians.

“Of late, we have seen the use of BURS as a political weapon on those against the President Mokgweetsi Masisi administration.  As the Gaborone City Council, we call upon all public institutions to remain professional and apolitical in the discharge of their duties.  It is unacceptable for public institutions such as the BURS to be used as hired guns in an attempt to silence opposition leaders. Such conduct stifles our democracy,” GCC mayor, Kagiso Thutlwe said.
