High Court official charged with abortion

FRANCISTOWN: An Information Technology (IT) officer at the Francistown High Court appeared in court yesterday to face a single count of concealing birth. The state alleges that Chandapiwa Baemeleng, 28, of Monarch location committed an abortion during an unknown date in July last year at Bluetown location.

Baemeleng pleaded not guilty to the charge and told Senior Magistrate Thebeetsile Mulalu that she will conduct her own defence.

Prosecutor Rodger Bosena from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) told the court that investigations into the matter are complete adding, “the state will call three witnesses to prove its case against the accused”. Mulalu set April 30 for mention and August 11 as the trial date.
