New kid on the block relishes stardom

Double Up
Double-Up of the popular hit, Thukwi Le Mala that dropped on April 4, 2019, has been making waves in radio stations and now the 25-year-old born from Tobane is becoming Botswana’s busiest new pop sensation.

From the same studio that produced Motlha’s Mmamotse, Thukwi Le Mala might as well be another pop force.

Double-Up, whose real name is Kabelo Lucky Matome, told Arts & Culture that he started his music career in 2017.

Double-Up’s original story follows a narrative that is not standard in the pop and R&B scene.“Before being signed into Roc Lefatshe Records, I was signed to different record labels, but I never really made my mark in the industry,” Double-Up said.

Thukwi Le Mala is a Setswana saying that means messing up. The song sounds more like the writer had channelled his troubles into this striking record of a man who regrets his decisions.

Prior to the release of the song, it pushed people to actually go out and learn more about Double-Up. However, Double-Up has not had a smooth ride to the top of the charts. Before Thukwi Le Mala, Double-Up had released Tontobeletsa last year and the song did not receive good feedback from listeners. As a result of Thukwi Le Mala’s success,

Tontobeletsa has taken a hike hence it has now resurfaced and is doing quite well too.

“I would like to give a special shout out to Charma Gal who has made efforts to feature me in her songs such as Mokoti that has given me the necessary exposure given that I am new to the music industry,” a grateful Double-Up said.

His manager and producer, Suffocate added that ever since the release of Thukwi Le Mala, listeners now want a piece of him.

“Recently I have been getting very good response from the people in regards to the song and they are eager to hear more from Double-Up,” he highlighted.

Double-Up has an album he is currently working on, which will be released in early June featuring South Africa’s Afro pop singer Ntando, and Botswana’s very own Charma Gal. The album will be made available at BotswanaCraft and Setlhareng. Double-Up will be on a radio tour in South Africa soon to talk more about his singles and his upcoming album.
