EU Beef Market Still Elusive

The Botswana Meat Commission (BMC) still continues to struggle to satisfy the European Market with beef, as only 6,000 tonnes (P460 million) were sold to the EU last year. BMC CEO, Dr. Akanyang Tombale announced this at a media briefing in Lobatse on Wednesday.

Tombale says there is scarcity of cattle matching the EU market quality requirements. According to him 90% of Botswana’s cattle feed in communal pastures, something that disqualifies them for the EU market. They are required to be kept in an enclosed and registered facility.
