Speaking during the commemoration of the International Women’s Day organised by the Chinese Embassy in Gaborone Friday, Tshireletso stated that even up to today, women still fall victim ofo abuse and worse, being murdered at the slightest provocation.

She said they still face dangerous and humiliating situations mostly in rural areas, hence such acts can not be allowed to continue un-abated.

“This year’s theme, #BalanceForBetter” is a call to action for driving gender balance across the world. The theme drives the focus to new innovation in which women can advance gender equality and empowerment of women especially in areas of social protection, sustainable infrastructure and access to public services,” said Tshireletso.

The junior minister added that it is important for women to rally behind and support each other as they push forward to eliminate gender-based violence in gatherings. “There is a popular adage that goes mosadi ke thari ya sechaba, loosely translated to mean that a woman is the caretaker and nurturer of

the nation,” explained Tshireletso. She explained that in order for a society to thrive and be happy, it is important to eliminate gender based violence, barriers and disparities.

Affording women the opportunity to participate in all sectors of the society will also build solid platforms and foundations for societies and nations.

Tshireletso further expressed her gratitude to the country’s respective government and the community at large for the efforts they make in crafting policies and other instruments geared towards the elimination of gender barriers and empowerment of women.

Chinese diplomat, Mao Xuehong stated that International Women’s Day is a special day that reminds women of their worth as it helps them to voice loudly their perpetual pursuit of gender equality, their legal rights and their own development. It also provides the opportunity for women to come together to find more effective ways through which they can be supported and encouraged to come forth and take their rightful place in the society.
