The Monitor :: Mogoditshane Police Investigate Murder

In an interview with The Monitor, the District Administration Officer, Paul Oketsang confirmed to be investigating the case stating that they were still piecing the information together.

Oketsang said the duo allegedly got into a misunderstanding on Saturday night following an unpaid “piece-job” that they allegedly carried out together last year.

“Our preliminary investigations have established that the duo carried out a piece-job together last year and the deceased was furious with the suspect accusing him of having received the payment and did not give him his share. This is what allegedly caused a misunderstanding that led to a fight,” he said.

The police boss said the two men have been staying in the country unlawfully and working in the country without work permits.

“We received a report that the duo were fighting in a yard at Maipei ward at Mmopane village. Whilst fighting, the suspect allegedly hit the deceased with a fist, which resulted in him falling down, hit a cement slab with his head and collapsed,” Oketsang explained.

He stated that after receiving the report they rushed to the scene and took the deceased to Princess Marina Hospital (PMH) where on arrival he was certified dead by doctors.

“The 26-year-old deceased is currently at PMH mortuary while we are trying to locate his next of kin.

The suspect, also of the same age is currently in police custody and has been charged with murder,” he said.

Meanwhile, Oketsang said Sir Seretse Khama police are investigating a case in which a cyclist aged 37 was hit by a combi at Block 7 last Tuesday.

He said then, the cyclist sustained serious head injured and was hospitalised at Gaborone Private Hospital (GPH) for days before he succumbed to the injuries yesterday morning.

Oketsang said the combi and the cyclist were heading the same direction and the accident occurred when the deceased tried make a left turn.

He said the driver of the combi aged 36, was taken to the police station for questioning and later released.

“The cyclist lost his life following the injuries. Investigations into the matter are ongoing and the combi driver is likely to be charged with an offence of causing deaths by careless driving,” he said.

Oketsang raised a concern over escalating cases of fatal accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists in his policing area. He pleaded with motorists to drive with extra caution knowing that pedestrians also have the right to use the road just like them.

He said in most cases pedestrians are hit by cars when trying to cross the road as well as walking by the roadside.
