MMP Family Dominate YAMAs

After so much uncertainty in the past week, the fifth Yarona FM Music awards were finally held at the GICC on Saturday.

Before the event, former Yarona FM presenter DJ Robbie Rob took his former employers to Companies and Intellectual Property Authority (CIPA) over the rights of the YAMAs logo and name.

He threatened to cancel the awards if the CIPA had decided in his favour, but by Saturday, CIPA had not made a decision so the awards went ahead.

But it was far from over as the host, Bonang Matheba from South Africa delayed the start of the awards as her outfit was allegedly stuck with her stylist in Kenya.

Those in attendance at the event had to wait for close to three hours as the organisers ran around to find something suitable for SA’s finest media personality.

She finally found something to wear and the YAMAs started just half an hour before midnight. Queen B even admitted to Showtime right after the awards that it was an outfit crisis that delayed the show.

“My suitcase was not around, so I had to make a plan, I always have four gowns and this one I had it in my other bag,” she briefly told Showtime after the show.

Bonang had to wear one gown the whole night while her co-host Loungo Pitse changed. Besides the drama, the most important people of the night finally got what they deserved after working hard last year.

Local kwaito trio, MMP Family were the biggest winners of the night as they walked away with three awards for their song chooseday which features Charma Gal. The group opened the awards with a performance of the same

song, which later scooped three awards. They won the best collabo, best single kwaito and song of the year.

Manyora, as they are popularly known, gave the song of the year trophy to Charma Gal as an appreciation. They took home P20, 000 from the three awards.

Hottest Hip hop and R&B group, Ice Cold Mob won two awards ahead of favourite Motlha of mmamotse fame.

They won the best new comer and best single R&B for their song about you featuring ATI.  Han C continued where he left off last year when he retained the People’s choice Artist of the year award.

His collaboration song with Berrybone called mafurafura also won best male single award. Motlha didn’t win a single award despite being the most nominated with five nominations.

Dramaboi continued his winless run as he walked away empty handed. Legendary radio DJ Owen Rampha won the Icon Award while the late HHP was honoured with a tribute.

Oskido’s performance was the highlight of the night as he dished out classic songs like I believe and people enjoyed every bit.

In terms of fashion, most people really tried to stick to the retro theme and the photographers were busy as usual. Overall the awards were not that bad even though everything was rushed. Bonang’s co-host Pitse was as impressive as usual and proved that he is one of the best presenters in the country.

Scar also announced that he will return to Yarona FM’s morning show as permanent replacement to Robbie Rob and Brando’s The Feel Good Foundation.
