The Monitor :: Chouka, Mamoja Share Spoils In Frenetic Affair

This season Chouka has been the shadow of the side that terrorised their opponents in the past two seasons. This time they are struggling to make inroads in the league and languish at position six.

Against Mamoja, they showed glimpses of their best attacking football, but were let down by poor finishing and goalkeeping mistakes, which their coach Letlogile Seoforeng referred to as a crisis.

“We have a goalkeeping crisis. We concede unnecessary goals week in and week out because of childish mistakes and it puts the team under pressure, hence why we struggle,” Seoforeng said.

The encounter kicked off at a high tempo, with Chouka dictating terms and forcing the visitors into their half.  Samuel Mokgoro squandered a glorious chance four minutes into the game when he found himself unmarked in the penalty area, but his shot was tame.  They created five corner kicks and two free kicks in a good area in the opening 10 minutes, but failed to profit.  Against the run of play, Kenny Tarea headed home a Prince Moseki’s long ball to hand Mamoja the lead in the 12th minute.

Chouka worked an immediate response, but Katlego Ralegoreng shot wide from 16 yards. Ralegoreng then set up Itumeleng Mabuaaeme with a defence splitting pass, but his first touch let him down and the defence recovered to clear.

Moseki beat Chouka’s goalkeeper straight from the corner with his side’s first corner kick of the game to increase their lead in the 32nd minute. The visitors were satisfied with their lead and contained

their opponents until the break.

Mamoja absorbed Chouka’s pressure, resorting to counter-attacking. They nearly shocked Chouka with a third goal only for Relebanye Selogelo’s powerful header to rattle the crossbar. Chouka’s persistence paid off on the hour mark.

Mamoja’s goalkeeper made a mess of a save, and Khumo Oitsile was at the right place to poke home.

Eight minutes later, Ronnie Leagatse unleashed a half volley from 20 yards that forced a wondrous save from Mamoja’s number one.  After several attempts on goal, Mokgoro levelled matters in the 81st minute.  As Ralegoreng curled a free kick to the far corner, the goalkeeper cleared onto the path of Mokgoro, who drilled into the bottom left corner.

After the goal, Mamoja seemed  to suddenly re-awaken and hence pressed Chouka, but the hosts managed to hold onto a draw. Mamoja coach, Johnsen Moisakwena blamed a concentration lapse.

“We played according to the plan. We got two goals and we lost the lead because of mistakes and lack of concentration,” he said. Seoforeng rued missed chances. “We could have wrapped this game in the first half. We also need some work on our finishing.”
