Over P160 000 missing from First Division North coffers

PALAPYE: The Botswana Football Association (BFA) has launched an investigation against the First Division North (FDN) committee over the missing P160, 000, which was found not accounted for in the recent audit. BFA chief executive officer, Mfolo Mfolo told First Division North clubs at Botsalo Hotel, that a new committee would replace the suspended officials.

Mfolo said no one is guilty at this stage, until proven otherwise, as investigations continue.  The audit was for the financial year ending March 30, 2018.

He said red flags in the accounts of FDN and four other regions were raised after a BFA audit by PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PWC) accountants and auditors firm.

Following the PWC findings BFA engaged another firm, Sigma Accounting Services to delve deeper into the accounts of the FDN.

He said among findings, were two receipts books that carried some discrepancies, transactions were made over the phone, and there was no authorisation for the cheques.

“An audit revealed that P168 295.60 could not be accounted for and the audit report was given to the committee to respond to. They did, but it fell short of the accounting procedures,” Mfolo said.

He indicated that a way forward would be reached once the investigations are completed.

He said if the seven members are cleared of any wrongdoing they would be reinstated.

The suspended members are barred from involvement in any football activity until the

conclusion of the matter.

The interim team would be led by Jonas Ikgopoleng, Carlos Sebina would be the vice chairman, Thebeetsile Motswaeng (secretary) and Lesedi Letshwao (treasurer) while Lucas Modimana, Kethobogilwe Batsweletse and Keitumetse Dijeng are additional members.

The suspended chairperson Mpezeni Sambandawe maintains the matter was a witch-hunt.  Sambandawe said the auditor came without a prior warning and they were denied time to reconcile necessary material to allow for a smooth audit. He confirmed they were called to account after the audit.

“We told them that we have not met the auditor because we were not given enough time to reconcile everything. We requested that we be afforded some time but our request was turned down,” he said.

“Over and above when we knocked on the doors where we could get proof of the missing accounting information we found restraining orders that we should not be assisted.”

He remains confident that they will gather sufficient information to clear their names.
