Businessman, Thapelo Letsholo won the controversial Kanye North Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) parliamentary primary election race over the weekend. Letsholo won an election challenged by all other contestants, as voting went on through the night until Sunday morning in some areas.

He garnered 1,878 votes followed by Patrick Ralotsia with 1,398 votes. Victor Makuku got 293 votes, Leach Tlhomelang was voted by 266 people while Julias Kamodi managed 216 votes ahead of Kenalemogwe Mopipi who managed only 142 votes. Candidates bemoaned that failure to close the polling stations disadvantaged them.

None of the parliamentary or council candidates accepted the results with most of them having discrepancies. The losing candidates complained that the playing field was not level accusing branch members of actively campaigning. “It was a mess, our people were not in the voters’ roll, and some did not have cards. So we cannot accept the results,” one council candidate said.
