Mmegi Online :: Solution-searching GU heads to Palapye

GU spent arguably their worst season since their promotion back to the Premier League in 2005, as their season was fraught with financial land mines.

Their financier, Rapula Okaile is involved in legal battles, which saw him relinquish his post as chairperson, leaving the club in a financial hole.

In the past season, GU lost long-time financial backer, Nicholas Zakhem, which compromised the running of the club.

This season, players went for months without pay, and there is still no solution in sight.

There is a glimmer of hope after the club managed to cling on to their players who had threatened to quit en-masse, and only last week, GU pocketed P1.5 million from the sale of Kabelo Seakanyeng and Thatayaone Kgamanyane to South African side, Chippa United.

Tomorrow, the club heads to Palapye in its continued bid to find a financial solution and also

heal the wounds amongst the divided fans. There are pending court cases, in which a certain section challenged the legitimacy of the present committee.

Zakhem, who has been linked with a takeover at rivals, Mochudi Centre Chiefs, has instead, renewed his membership with GU.

GU general manager, Olebile Sikwane said the business mogul had renewed his gold card membership.

“That tells you that he is part of GU. We are going to Palapye where the focus will be on the state of the club in relation to partnerships, the coach and the FIFA judgement,” Sikwane said.

GU lost coach, Rudolfo Zapata to AFC Leopards of Kenya while the club was fined P39,000 for the unfair dismissal of Ghanaian, Bismack Appiah.

Regarding the fine, GU had through the Botswana Football Association (BFA) requested to be given more time to settle the penalty exacted.
