BNSC to centralise funding

The Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) is in the process of centralising funding for sporting events hosted in the country. The BNSC chairperson, Solly Reikeletseng told Mmegi Sport this week that they have been discussing the move.

He said the idea came about after it was realised that there are some issues that come up after hosting of events.

“We want to avoid a situation whereby suppliers complain that they have not been paid. We also want to avoid a situation where members of Local Organising Committees (LOC) are accused of funds mismanagement. We want all the funds that are raised through sponsorships to be directed to BNSC,” he said.

Reikeletseng said the Commission would then pay suppliers. He said the idea is going to be discussed at the BNSC annual general meeting in November.

Reikeletseng was speaking following the Confederation of University and Colleges Sports Associations (CUCSA) announcement that they are still short in meeting their budget.

The 2018 CUCSA Games LOC chairperson, Thapelo Pabalinga told Mmegi Sport that so far the government has allocated them P3 million and the budget stood at P5.5 million. He said it is better than nothing and they are still seeking more sponsorship from the private sector.

CUCSA games kick off from June 18 to 22, 2018. President Mokgweetsi Masisi would officially

open the games, which would be attended by 10 countries.

“Team Botswana was in camp last week in Serowe and the other camp is due for Lobatse next week.  We want other countries to see how seriously we are taking these games,” he said.

Countries would compete in all ball sports (netball, volleyball, football, badminton and tennis.) There is also athletics, karate and chess.

Pabalinga said there is swimming for a few countries being Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe.

“Some of the codes are not popular in other countries, but in CUCSA regulations, for a code to be recognised and be part of the games, we need a minimum of five countries to register. If its two or three countries, it is considered friendly matches,” he said.

Pabalinga said it is unfortunate that some countries did not register for other competitions such as swimming.

Regarding the medical aspect, Pabalinga said the team has been given a psychologist, which is a first for a CUCSA games team.

The participating countries are Botswana, Angola, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, Zambia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
