Mmegi Online :: Coach embarrasses BRU over Vultures job

While Botswana Rugby Union (BRU) president, Lesedi Keekae was making an announcement at the National Stadium on Wednesday afternoon; across town Greeves was busy drafting his resignation letter.

Greeves has coached Vultures since 2008 and his contract ended last year. During his stay, he won nine games and lost 14 out of the 23 he coached. That makes it a 39.13% win rate. He has been in and out of the role since 2008.

Speaking to Mmegi Sport, Greeves said he had given his reason for resignation to the Botswana Rugby Union (BRU).

“I cannot discuss the matter with the press at this point,” he said. BRU secretary general, Ernest Mantsi said he was not aware of Greeves’ resignation. He said they were aware that the coach had signed a contract to lead the men’s team as it prepares for the June international assignments.

“We are not aware of his resignation. He was given a new contract last week and what you are saying is news

to me.

It would be unfortunate if what you are saying is true,” a surprised Mantsi said.

When asked who would replace Greeves at such short notice, Mantsi said there were many candidates who had applied for the job.

He said it means they would have to speed up the process of appointing another coach.

Munyarazi Mhonda and Seabe Gabatladiwe are the assistant coaches. Meanwhile, The Vultures are ranked number 67 in the world, according to the rankings released last week. Since 1996, The Vultures played 49 games, winning 18, and have had one draw with 30 losses. The team has had three other coaches other than Greeves.

Neil Gouws was the coach in 2010, who handled the team in two assignments and lost both. Gareth Gilbert took over in 2004 and left the same year after five matches, registering four wins and a loss. Martin Colley was in charge from 1996 until 2004. He handled eight matches with three wins and five losses.
