Murder, rape remain national nightmare

Crime statistics for the year 2017 revealed a substantial increase in a number of cases involving serious and violent crimes such as murder, rape and house-breaking.

The commissioner of Botswana Police Service (BPS) Keabetswe Makgophe shared his concern at the ongoing 46th Botswana Police Senior Officers Annual Conference. He said that a total of 315 people were murdered in 2017 as opposed to 305 in the previous year, which translates to a three-percent increase. 

Makgophe said the killings are mostly attributed to misunderstanding between intimate lovers and conflict at entertainment places.  He, however, stated that most of the perpetrators are not brave enough so they eventually resort to suicide.
