Sebego noncommittal but return imminent

Former Botswana Football Association (BFA) president, Tebogo Sebego has chosen to stay away from talk that he is poised for a return when the association holds elections in two years time.

Mmegi Online :: Sebego noncommittal but return imminent

However, all appears set for his return, after his 2016 defeat to incumbent, Maclean Letshwiti, who promised to serve one term.

Sebego has said his focus is on his role as Notwane president, but speculation about contesting for the top BFA position refuses to die.

“We are contesting for the top four in the 2018/2019 season. People are entitled to speculate all they want. I am a football person and will always be involved in football one way or another,” he said this week.

Indications are that all the ground work has been done, with key personnel who backed Sebego, already in the system. There are reported differences within the BFA presidium, which might change the dynamics heading into 2020.

No other name has been thrown around to replace Letshwiti if he steps down, with Sebego firmly in the picture for a return.

The move to take a prominent role at Notwane was seen as one of the ways to consolidate his base. And now with Toronto back in the top league, his influence is expected to spread.

Sebego has said he cannot stop people from speculating, without explicitly distancing himself from a possible return.

“I think it is important for the football community to respect and support Rre Letshwiti during his reign as the BFA president. We all must focus in our different supporting roles until the end of his reign. At the moment, I am

happy where I am; at Notwane and my Sunday football team. The rest of talk is not in my space,” he said.

There has been a re-alignment of forces since the 2016 election, with the man seen as behind the Letshwiti victory, Nikolas Zakhem, dropping out of the picture.

Instead, Jagdish Shah, has stepped in and now heads the Botswana Premier League, a key voting organ with 16 votes.

Galaxy yesterday.

A loss for Systems, and a win for Sankoyo will see the Maun side draw level with the ‘guards’ on 32 points.

Then there is the TAFIC matter. Promoted into the Premiership amid much frenzy of ‘Operation Gwilila’, the mood in the ‘Toropo ya muka’ is understandably deflated.

TAFIC have failed to live up to billing and is starring down the barrel. Another return to the First Division would be devastating.

‘Matjiminyenga’ play a Gunners side eager to secure the points to make their Premiership stay safe, and at the same time move closer to the top eight sides.

At the top, matters might be settled this weekend, which would be an anti-climax, considering the close race in recent weeks, in which leadership regularly exchanged hands.

A Rollers win away in Serowe coupled with a Galaxy loss to Systems will sew up the title for the MmaMasire outfit.

It would be a rare double for Rollers, who were the last side to win a double 13years ago.
