Makwala powers to Commonwealth gold

Isaac Makwala gave the country the first medal at this year's Commonwealth Games with a powerful 400m run at lunch time. Baboloki Thebe completed a fruitful outing for Botswana when he took silver.

Tucked in the inside lane, Makwala sprung away and was never in danger of being caught, as he eased into the lead at the final bend.

The result was never in doubt and he crossed the finish line in 44.55 seconds, with countryman Baboloki Thebe second in a time of 45.09sec. Javon Francis, of Jamaica, was third in 45.11sec.
