Botswana will bid to host the 2020 Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations, as part of gauging the strides made under an ambitious youth development program.

Botswana Football Association (BFA) chief executive officer, Mfolo Mfolo said they will bid for the junior tournament, which dovetails with the association's ambitions.

Since he took office in 2016, BFA president, Maclean Letshwiti has focused on youth development, arguing it is key to turning around the fortunes of the national team.

Addressing a monthly press briefing at Lekidi Centre today, Mfolo said it imperative that the country hosts the tournament, in order to gauge progress made under the Under-15 Elite Youth League.

BFA has introduced a nationwide elite youth league program where top talent will make it to the junior national side.

regular sparring partners, Lesotho, in a friendly match at the National Stadium on March 24.

The Zebras are preparing for a tough trip to Angola for a Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on March 27.

"We have to play all teams. Lesotho is also a national team," Mfolo said, in defending the choice of the opponents.

Meanwhile, Mfolo informed journalists that South Africa will replace Botswana as the 2018 COSAFA Cup hosts.

"South Africa has provisionally agreed to step in and host the COSAFA cup and we are grateful for that. The country will also host the COSAFA Women's Challenge in September," Mfolo said.
