With the new single, the talented producer is no longer short of great collaborations with some of SA’s well known and respected artists. Darkboy Masey’s previous single was a different sound considering that the lines between musical styles these days are gritty.

In the new single he featured Mpumi, who broke into the music scene in 2012, and is already the powerhouse vocalist with a number of hits to her name. She was the vocalist behind Heavy K’s chart topping ‘Wena’ and also featured and wrote Euphonik & Bob Eezy’s ‘Busa’ including her own debut single called Somandla. Real name Nompumelelo Mzobe, Mpumi’s presence is felt during the entire song and it corroborates perfectly with Darkboy Masey’s thriving creativity.

With the festive season here already, Darkboy Masey took advantage because now fans are constantly on the lookout for the hottest song. Besides that, times have changed and musicians are looking to tap into undiscovered genres. Konakele represents a sound that is now popular in some of the world’s biggest nightclubs.

In an interview with Showbiz, the man who has been a DJ since the age of 14 said they had to go for the new trends and come up with an upbeat sound, which is relevant to the current scene. He said the genre of house is called gqom. The gqom is a sound that emerged mostly from the townships of Durban in South Africa. Experts have labeled it as “a raw dance

music blueprint with a polyrhythmic bustle - part broken beat, part chrome-plated synth menace”. They said it sounds somewhat influenced by UK sounds like grime and funky, but has nothing to do with them.

He said while the different sounds in the previous single worked for them this time they wanted a bit of change. “We started working on the song in August and it was released last month. So far the reception has been positive with a lot of requests and airplay on radio stations,” he said. Darkboy Masey added that they recorded the song at Helem Productions in SA. He highlighted that he has continued to penetrate both the Botswana market and Southern African market.

He said in order to reach the whole of Southern Africa, he has decided to penetrate the SA market because it has so much weight. He said since collaborating with SA artists he has realised that they work with teams and every person has responsibilities from the PR to the road manager. He said in order to approach the artists one has to be formal and use the relevant modes of communication. “They value their work so an artist has to show their worth before any collaboration can be arranged,” he said.

Darkboy Masey, who recently released a high quality video shot by Gorilla Films, said for now he is releasing singles in order to build a name and establish a target market.
