On the day, the Sikh community also donated blood and distributed cooked meals to Ledumang residents as a way of showing their compassion. They had also invited Princess Marina Hospital staff to carry out blood donations.

The festival is celebrated as the day to remember the Holy Guru. It is a reminder for the devotees to follow Guru Nanak’s teachings and overcome the five vices of lust, greed, attachment, anger and pride.

Kuldeep Singh Bhatyani told The Monitor that the event provided an opportunity for the Sikh community to give back and assist the needy members of the community where their temple is situated.

He said that they have opened a clinic, which operates every Sunday from morning until afternoon.

“It is a free clinic, open to members of the public on Sundays. There is a general practitioner who carries out consultations. In

case of special cases, the clinic makes referrals to specialists. The clinic opens from 10am to 1pm on Sundays,” he said. Bhatyani also said patients could be referred to get medication at PHC chemist free of charge if it is not available at the clinic. He called on the community to access the facility, which has been operating since 2015.

Meanwhile, Bhatyani said they distributed over 300 rations to members of the community on Saturday. He said they celebrate the birth of their religious founder by sharing with members of the community.

He further said a large number of their members came to donate blood. He stated that this is another way of showing that their members are committed to saving lives.

The celebrations, which started on Friday, ended yesterday with a formal programme that included speeches and prayers.
