Newly-crowned best female disc jockey (DJ) at the Next Best Female DJ competition, DJ Mimi talks excitedly about her new reign and her new journey in the industry.

The 27-year-old was crowned the best female DJ after she battled it out with 10 other female DJs at Chez Nicholas during the competition conceptualised by Next Best DJ academy.

“Coming up as the best DJ in the competition came as a surprise because it was a challenge. There was a lot of diverse talent, but I managed to survive. I am overwhelmed and excited at the same time,” DJ Mimi said.

Winning this competition means that she will get more exposure to perform at topnotch gigs and festivals due to the management and mentorship that she will be getting from the Next Best DJ Academy.

“I have always dreamt of having a management deal ,especially when it comes to getting gigs because I have been failing to score the proper gigs since my career started in 2009,” said the house music DJ.

The mother-of-one stated that prior to joining the competition she had been working as

a resident DJ at different spots around town, as she strived to take care of herself and her child.

She narrated on how her journey as a female DJ has been a tough one, stating that upon establishing her career she fell pregnant, which meant she had to take a break from her job. She said she lost all her connections, but managed to bounce back.

“In my journey, I have learnt that passion is all it takes to be a great DJ. I am hoping that this management deal that I have will see me break into the international scene.”

As part of her winning package she received P10,000, one year management contract, three months residency at Chez Nicholas and allowance and a slot to mix on radio every Tuesday at 6:30pm on Ride Show with DJ Izzy on Yarona FM.

In 2014 DJ Mimi took position three at the annual President’s arts competitions.
