News reaching Mmegi indicate that there might just be more trouble looming in Member of Parliament for Francistown East, Phandu Skelemani's camp with just a week ahead of the primary elections. His members are said to be abandoning his corner.

Mmegi Online :: Skelemani faces defeat

According to an insider within the BDP some members have been rooting for Skelemani's opposition for the primary elections. They claim their actions are purely based on the fact that they can realise that the ship is sinking and they do not want to be associated with failure. “

"People already do not have faith in him. Even if he wins the primary elections, there is a high chance he might lose in the general elections to the Botswana Congress Party (BCP), especially looking at the margin in the 2009 general election," said one of the branch committee members.

Already four members have left, confirmed the committee member.

The treasurer at the Francistown East constituency, Norah Jager, who has been with the party since 1976, revealed to Mmegi that she too had some members trying to recruit her to another camp but she refused because of her loyalty to Skelemani.

"Just a few days ago some of the members came knocking at my door saying I should defect with them if I know

what is good for me, but because of my loyalty I refused. I was not shaken by their promiscuous intentions," said Jager.

When asked how far Skelemani is in terms of preparations, Jager mentioned that the minister would be in Francistown tomorrow to begin his ground work as he has been away for a long time and they have noticed that he may be a step behind his competition.

"Skelemani will in town on Saturday to start his campaign. His competition has been doing door to door campaigns so he needs to come to do a bit of damage control," said Jager.

When asked if any of the members have defected to his camp, the man who will stand against Skelemani, Buti Billy, said he could not reveal much but only time would tell.

"At this point I do not know of any, but time will tell and we can only hope for the best come election time," said Billy.

Efforts to contact Skelemani were futile as his phone went unanswered.
