Most cyclists attributed their low speed to the strong winds. Thabiso Mokalake from Tsela Riders won the 60km race.

He said although he did not prepare much, he managed to perform well. He noted that last year he was disqualified after using the wrong route but was determined to scoop the title on Saturday. In the 110km male category, Abeng Malete proved his mettle ahead of Amogelang Thwabi and Sethomo Masepe. The trio showed determination but it was Malete who sailed through.  “It was really an amazing experience and I have learnt to be patient and be passionate about the sport because it requires a lot of hard work. I raced for one hour six minutes through the strong wind, which was quite challenging especially at the turning points. There were however less obstacles and less competition,”

Malete said.

Thwabi from BOTRAIL Cycling Club expressed his gratitude towards Botswana Railways for sponsoring his race for the second time. He said the competition keeps growing every year and he hopes to return next year.

Tsaone Latiwa was alone in the women’s category. Tshepang Mazwigwila from Debswana Jwaneng Mine said it was critical for sportsmen and women to come together and raise funds for a good cause. He commended sponsors for showing their commitment towards charity and said the funds will go towards a socio-economic project.

Meanwhile, Jwaneng Mine general manager, Albert Milton said funds from the previous races were used to build a house for an underprivileged family. Some of the funds were donated to the Mpule Kwelagobe Children Centre adding that over P2 million has been raised since the inception of the race.
