The leader of Botswana National Front (BNF), Duma Boko reportedly survived a nocturnal coup recently, which was engineered by legal hawks in the party. Highly placed party insiders say the group approached one of Boko’s lieutenants, who agreed to the plan “as long as it is done according to the constitution”.

The ringleaders of the coup however backed off from their plan at the last minute, as they feared it would destabilise the BNF and the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC). Boko is also the leader of the UDC.  The coup leaders, it is alleged, were driven with rage at Boko’s “indifference in the BMD factional wars,” insiders told Mmegi yesterday.

Mmegi is informed that the plotters wanted Boko to openly support the BMD faction led by Ndaba Gaolathe and Wynter Mmolotsi over the one marshalled by Sidney Pilane, Nehemiah Modubule and Gilbert Mangole.
