Government doesn�t care about UB

It is sad that the nation’s premier tertiary education institution, the University of Botswana (UB) is tottering on the brink of a financial abyss.

In November last year, we learnt that the institution has been battling under-funding from the Government for seven years. This was disclosed by the former vice chancellor Professor Thabo Fako, when he appeared before the Parliamentary Committee on Statutory Bodies. Fako painted a gloomy picture saying UB needed at least P1 billion in urgent funding. He said the situation was untenable.

Fast forward to this month. We learnt this week that the Government is still crippling the UB by not paying tuition fees after it surfaced that the institution is now owed about P500 million.
