Easter: Is it still the same?

For centuries, Easter has been one of the most respected celebrations in the Christian community and beyond. In Botswana, the holidays are revered, being second only to the Christmas break in terms of prominence. But something has changed. Mmegi Correspondent, NNASARETHA KGAMANYANE asked around

Mmegi Online :: Easter: Is it still the same?

Shirley Madikwe

(Gamodubu Childcare Trust)

In the past, the Easter Holidays were very serious. They were one of the most respected holidays in the country. At the time, even people who never went to church did so. I was a Roman Catholic member and would never abscond church service. However, I feel these days things have changed. Easter holidays are just like Christmas. They are not respected. Indulging in alcohol has taken precedence.  It has won over a lot of souls. During the old days, we knew it was time to eat those special and delicious meals, but things have changed. I feel these holidays have lost their significance. I guess this is because of the changes of time and the environment that we are living in.

Gaonyafele Phuti

(Beauty pageant coordinator)

When I was a young girl, the Easter holidays were very important on the calendar. I used to go to church with my parents. It did not matter where I was, when these holidays came, I always made sure I went to church. Today I view them like any other day. I don’t respect them like I used to. As a young person, I am faced with so many challenges. I take advantage of this day by making events that will make me some money.

Charity Kgotlafela

(Former public relation Officer of Bot50)

As a Christian woman, these holidays are memorable to me. I have always respected them. When I woke up this morning, I told myself that I have to put myself in

Jesus Christ’s shoes. I believe that as Christians, we have to replicate Him. I started fasting and praying some weeks back. As Christians, we were taught to be humble. This day is a remembrance of the sacrifices Christ made for us. However, in the past, the youth used to slip off during these holidays because they were enticed by the world.  Nowadays we are seeing the youth being a driving force of Christianity. We have youth and female pastors. In the past most of the pastors were old men, which is not the case anymore because they have lessened. We now have a lot of activities driven by the youth in our churches such as all night prayer, fellowship during the week and others.

Chilly Segona

(Director at Afro-Heavens Productions)

In the past I used to celebrate these holidays not trying to be close to God. I was chasing the world. However, nowadays every thing I do, I align myself with God. This is the time to forget about everything else, meditate and thank Him for His blessings.

Khumo Mogorosi

(Local tertiary student)

Nna tota, these holidays are not any different from any other day to me. They are just like any other day. This does not mean that I do not believe in God or Jesus Christ. I do. I pray every day. I am thankful to Him for always protecting me. I grew up in a Christian family and I have always gone to church for my entire life.
