Writing markets that pay

March is starting so I thought it might be good to begin the month by searching around for some writing markets. I have a list this month of a few fiction markets, article markets, a book publisher and a humour poetry contest.

1. Holiday House Book Publishers

Holiday House publishes books for children ages four and up. According to their website regarding submissions:  Please send the entire manuscript, whether submitting a picture book or novel. All submissions should be directed to the Editorial Department, Holiday House, 425 Madison Ave., New York, NY 10017. Send your manuscript by normal post not registered or certified mail. There is no need to include a self-addressed, stamped envelope. 2. OutdoorsNW

Outdoors NW is a magazine about outdoor recreation, adventure travel, health and nutrition, and outdoor fitness. The editors accept queries for articles. New writers to the magazine should send their CV and some writing samples. They pay $75 for a news brief (300 – 600 words), $100 for an article (650 – 1,000 words) and $125 for a feature (over 1,000 words). 3. Journeywoman

The editors at Journeywoman are looking for articles about female-centric travel experiences for their website. They want articles written from a woman’s point of view which contain information of interest to women travellers. Articles should be up to 900 words in length. Journeywoman pays a flat $35 per accepted article. You can find their complete guidelines here:

Journey Woman’s objective is to inspire females to travel safely and to connect women travellers worldwide. They especially like travel articles that include helpful hints. Send completed stories to


4. Deep Magic

Deep Magic is a bimonthly online magazine.  It publishes what it describes as “clean fantasy and sci-fi stories” which means good clean stories — no sex, swearing, or graphic violence.  Stories should be between 1,000 to 40,000 words.
They pay 8 cents per word for the first 5000 words, then 6 cents per word up to

5. Problem Daughters is a forthcoming anthology from Future Fire.

From their website they are looking for stories that “amplify the voices of women who are sometimes excluded from mainstream feminism.” They want “science fiction, fantasy, horror, alternate history, slipstream, or just plain weird.”

Stories should be up to 7,500 Words and they pay 6 cents per word. Send your story or poems as a .docx, .doc, .rtf or .odt attachment to by March 31, 2017. Please do not submit more than one story or more than three poems at a time. Please do not send work that is under consideration elsewhere (no simultaneous submissions or reprints). 6. Wergle Flomp Humor Poetry Contest

The contest is open to everyone and there is no entry fee. The first place winner will receive $1,000; second place will receive $250; and 10 honourable mentions will receive $100 each. All winners will be published online. The poems should be no longer than 250 lines. 7. GreenPrints

Green Prints is a digest-size magazine that publishes personal stories and essays about gardening. They are looking for a strong plot and characters and a good ending. 8. Red Sun Magazine

This is a quarterly magazine publishing sci-fi, fantasy and horror fiction. They pay $100 for stories up to 15,000 words; $150 for stories 15,000-17,000; and $300 for serializations.
