Malepa denies comeback reports

FRANCISTOWN: Former ECCO City Greens marksman and current assistant coach Bolelang ‘Chippa’ Malepa has denied reports that he is mulling a return from retirement to help guide his struggling side. Mamoja struggled in the first round of the Debswana First Division North campaign. But Bolelang, although not entirely closing the door, dismissed an immediate return.

“I am training because I have gained a few kilos and I am just trying to burn those,” he said.

“I have not thought about returning to competitive football but if the team needs my assistance in that regard and I feel I can do it; I would consider then but at the moment I am training for my physical fitness.”

A source had said the club’s dismal first round performance had prompted Chippa’s return. The experienced striker is said to have resumed training with the rest of the squad. “He feels there is a gap in the team that is why he is coming back,” the source said.

The team which was on fire last season missing promotion by a whisker has been on a downward spiral and find themselves sixth, eight points adrift of table toppers, TAFIC.

Team coach, Texan Phiri said he is not aware of Malepa’s return, but said it would be welcome news if the veteran player would indeed return.

would be of benefit to his young squad that has been struggling because of lack of leadership on the field.

“I know he (Malepa) is training but he has not mentioned a comeback to me,” he said. “It would help (if he comes back). His experience is invaluable and the team would do with more experienced players on the field to help get the best out of our youngsters.”

Phiri said the team has hit crossroads with lack of funds and that has impacted negatively on the squad hence a heavy start in the first round.

He said the problem continues to hinder their training process, as some players may be disturbed and tempted to jump ship for greener pastures.

“The players are back in training but others came a bit late and the transfer window is still open and that has been a hindrance this far. However, we are hopeful we would keep all our players and get ourselves ready for the second round.”
