‘Load up the choppers like it’s December 31st’

Exactly 15 minutes to 2017, US rapper Rick Ross’ raspy deep voice bellowed from the loud speakers at the Duma FM Grounds commanding, “Load up the choppers like it’s December thirty first!” - a famous lyric by Ross from a song with Lil Wayne titled John meaning ‘load up the guns’. New Year’s Eve is popular time to shoot off guns in the US neighbourhoods.

Ross “looking devilish”, clad in all black with gold chains was finally live on stage in Gaborone on what has been dubbed the most anticipated rap show in the history of hip-hop in Botswana. The fans were exhilarated.

The Boss of Maybach Music Group might have lost weight but he has not lost his touch. He took the crowd back to the time when he started penetrating the Hip Hop game by performing his debut single ‘Huslin’, a song that eventually landed him a huge record deal with Def Jam.

When the New Year Day countdown began Ricky Rozay, as he is affectionately called in the rap scenes, stepped up to do the honours. As the norm, Rozay brought wine bottles on stage and it had to be the Luc Belaire Rose. Ross is the ambassador of Luc Belaire and he pops it in music videos and live performances and Duma FM was no different. As Meek Mill raps, “sippin’ rose with Rozay and it’s Belaire” Gaborone got the splash taste of Hip Hop’s new ‘it’ drink from Rozay.

It was a New Year and Rick Ross’ had to motivate the fans with his verse from DJ Khaled’s All I Do Is Win. From there he performed another verse from DJ Khaled’s recent offering entitled Do You Mind.

The crowd sang along Ross’ major hits like Hold Me Back, Diced Pineapples and Rich Forever. Rick Ross performed songs from his famous collaborations including his verses from Ace Hood’s Hustle Hard, Bugatti, French

Montana’ Aint Worried About Nothing and Chris Brown’s New Flame.

Overall, Rozay gave the lucky crowd that was there a New Year’s present in the form of stage performance. Botswana also gave Rozay a chance to celebrate the arrival of the New Year before his natives in the US. Batswana women appear to have left a lasting impression on Ross that he said he wanted to have a “baby mama in Botswana”.

Supporting acts that moved the crowd included Scar who started off his performance with his controversial hit single ‘Ntueleng’ before bringing back his classics, Metlholo and Happy Hour.

Before Scar, it was Oracle who was also on top of his game and he performed Breakthrough before wrapping up with Murda. Ora did some freestyling by asking two words from the crowd and made a verse from them.

Controversial rapper Ozi F Teddy was in his usual ‘up to no good’ element. With Triple H’s theme song on the background, Ozi F Teddy strolled around the stage like he was ready for fight with one the rappers he is beefing with. After doing some of his songs like Boom Shakalaka, On My Way and Ttg, Ozi F Teddy jumped off the stage for a rather cold interaction with the crowd. The crowd went from cold to uninterested while Ozi F Teddy tried in vain to entertain them.

Other performers on the night included, BanT, Sasa Klaas and Euri.

The show was brought by Fables and sponsored by MTN Business.
