Dimeku contested against Boitshoko Kinnear who got 148 votes followed by Malebogo Orapeleng with 42 votes. There were seven spoiled votes.

Orapeleng, who is not new to elections, lost again in the 2013 BDP primary elections to the late ward councillor Richie Kenosi.

BDP Palapye branch secretary, Boipuso Rasekopo said everything went well during the elections, which were supervised by the Mahalapye BDP constituency.

She was impressed by the turnout given the fact that it was one of the busy weekends during the festive season.

“This past weekend was a very busy one. In particular many people were held up hence the reasons why the turnout was low. Many people that voted were elderly people compared to the youth whom we understand their situation more especially at this time of the year. We are however pleased by the outcome since at the end of the day we have a winner,” she said.

stated that the three candidates are very active and strong members of BDP saying although there was bound to be a winner, all of them deserved the first place due to their dedication to the party.

“They were a team and they supported each other. Those who lost took the defeat well; after all we are from one party and are united and those who lose should rally behind the victor. Furthermore we need to unite more than ever to claim back our ward in the by-election,” she added.

The by- election comes as a result of the death of the Boikago/Madiba ward councillor Kenosi in November after battling with a headache.

Kenosi won the 2014 general elections after garnering 708 votes against the Botswana Congress Party’s (BCP) 596.

Dimeku will now go head to head against BCP’s Area Gabathusi who lost against the late Kenosi in the last general elections.
