Maswabi said this on Friday ahead of the 27th instalment of the race scheduled for December 25 in Mmadinare. He revealed new financial sponsors being the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development (MYESCD), Bamangwato Motors and African Alliance who have donated P32,000, P10,000 and P6,000 respectively.

The new sponsors join Mascom who have increased their sponsorship amount to P35,000 from last year’s P10,000. “Through the assistance of these sponsors we have managed to reach our target of P71,045 which will be the total sponsorship for this year’s race and it is an immense improvement from last year’s P32,000,” he said. Maswabi further indicated that they have improved the race to make it a wellness activity for everyone, highlighting that they have included new fun categories being sack race, bucket race, bicycle race as well as egg race, among others.

10km race for both men and women will bag P3, 000 and a trophy while the second and third prizes are P2,500 and P2,000 respectively including trophies.

In the 5km race for junior male and females the winners will walk away with P2,000 while position two and three will get P1,500 and P1,000 respectively. Other categories include the veterans and the masters. “We anticipate more numbers of participants due to the attractive prize money as well as new categories. Our low registration fees of P50 for the main races and P30 for the 5km race are also meant to attract more athletes,” said Maswabi.

The chairman further indicated that the race has a new patron being the area’s Member of Parliament who is also the Assistant Minister of MYESCD, Kefentse Mzwinila who takes from the former Vice president Ponatshego Kedikilwe. The event will be held under the theme, ‘Transition 50 to 50, Passing on the Baton’.
