It has since surfaced that President Ian Khama’s prayer, delivered at the end of his speech at Botswana’s 50th Independence Anniversary was just his own invention, the result of a moment of spontaneity.

Interestingly, the prayer part by the President is missing in all the messages that were read out at the kgotlas on his behalf. Even the official message distributed by the Office of the President soon after the delivery of the speech, does not have the prayer part.

Government spokesperson, Dr Jeff Ramsay says the prayer does not appear in the distributed speeches because the President decided to include it on his own. Dr Ramsay was confirming that the prayer part was entirely the President’s own and input. President Khama may not be famous for writing his own speeches, but the manner in which he delivered his prayer for the nation appeared to endear him  to many Batswana who felt that the prayer felt genuine and coming from the heart. Many took to the social media raving about their President, with some even claiming that he may have been the first Botswana President to do so.
