The Gaborone Village water tower

One of the more popular and enduring fallacies is that this imposing tower was constructed as an execution chamber. Doubtless, as with other fallacies, it will prove virtually impossible to eradicate this belief even though the evidence for it appears to rest on nothing more than the belief that the tower is an integral part of the old prison and its only possible function, therefore, must have been to provide a long drop for those sentenced to be hung.

Were this the case, the tower, for obvious security reasons, would have had to be enclosed within the prison walls and thus be an integral part of it. 

Even a casual look, however, will show that whilst the tower is adjacent to the prison it is in no way connected to it. It could not, therefore, have had any prison-related function.
