The Botswana Tourism Organisation (BTO), chief executive officer (CEO) Thabo Dithebe has resigned from duty under vague circumstances.

Dithebe made this announcement on Monday at an emergency staff meeting at the BTO offices. Dithebe resigns after only a year in office. He acted for a year before he assumed the leadership role.

Dithebe is the second CEO of the tourism organisation after the departure of the founding CEO, Myra Sekgororoane back in December 2013. Sekgororoane, a tourism industry veteran who rebranded the then Botswana Tourism Board (BTB), had served the organisation for eight years. Reached for reasons why he resigned out of the blue, Dithebe refused to comment directing all enquiries to the Public Relations Unit. “All official comments run through the Public Relations Office. They will answer to any of your questions as they normally do,” he said. Reached for comment, BTO’s Gillian Blackbeared confirmed the CEO’s sudden resignation but could not go into details indicating that the matter is “internal”.
